Roger Federer regains No. 2 slot amid rankings shake-up

The ATP Men's Singles Rankings experienced one of its biggest shake-ups of the year following the
conclusion of the Shanghai Rolex Masters Sunday.

There was movement at eight of the Top 11 spots, notably at No. 2 and 3 as Roger Federer re-jumped Novak Djokovic for the second spot in the world thanks to his appearance in the finals.

Federer now leads Djokovic by 190 points. Both men trail No. 1 Rafael Nadal by more than 4,000.

Plummeting out of the Top 10 was Nikolay Davydenko, the 2009 Shanghai champion. Davydenko plunged five spots from sixth to 11th. He was replaced at No. 6 by Tomas Berdych, a new high-water mark for the Czech.

Fernando Verdasco moved up two spots to seventh, with countryman David Ferrer up two spots to eighth. Russia's Mikhail Youzhny slipped back a spot to ninth and America's Andy Roddick regained his former rank at No. 10.

The biggest gain inside the Top 50 came courtesy surprise Shanghai semifinalist Juan Monaco of Argentina, who surged 15 spots to No. 26.

The biggest fall in the Top 50 was by France's Gilles Simon, who slipped from 39th to 48th.

In men's doubles, Leander Paes jumped three spots to fifth and Jurgen Melzer surged six spots to sixth with their title at Shanghai. Bob and Mike Bryan remain co-No. 1s in the world.

There were only cosmetic changes in the women's Top 20 after a slow week. Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova each moved up a spot to No. 18 and 19 respectively while Yanina Wickmayer slid from 18th to 20th.

The action is a bit more impressive this week with No. 7 Jelena Jankovic and No. 10 Victoria Azarenka headlining the $1,000,000, 470-point Moscow Cup while No. 9 Elena Dementieva leads the field in Luxembourg.

Both events are preludes to the WTA Championships which begin in Doha Oct. 26. Dementieva was the last player to qualify, swiping the No. 8 spot.
